Why do we call what we do ‘responsible’ and not ‘sustainable’?
Because we choose not to greenwash.
A lot of other brands would call what we do sustainable.
But we believe that producing things will inevitably leave a footprint and therefore is not sustainable.
This is why we prefer to call what we do ‘responsible production’.
To us, this feels more honest.

We put a lot of care into making informed choices.
We strive to step lightly and pay attention to even the smallest steps in our production process.
We embrace the ongoing learning this commitment requires.
We believe quality and integrity must go hand in hand throughout the design and production process.
To us, this brings heart and soul to everything we do.
This is how we fulfill this mission:

  • We embrace ‘slow production’ and source locally.
  • We produce exclusively in Germany with local artisans and centuries-old family run businesses.
  • We foster and value the individual attention invested in every single piece.
  • Every component of every bag is sourced as close as possible to our factories to minimize shipping distances and lower our carbon footprint.
  • 90% of our bag components come from Germany. 10% comes from nearby Italy and Spain.
  • All our leather, hardware and packaging are produced under the strictest EU environmental regulations.
  • Our German calf leather is ECO2L certified, utilizing the world’s first auditing method for calculating the energy efficiency and CO2 emission of a tannery.
  • Our German tannery is gold rated by the LWG (Leather Working Group), the world’s leading auditor of environmental practices in the leather industry.
  • To maintain this gold rating, all components of the tanning process must also be gold rated (hides, dyes, etc.).
  • The LWG conducts unannounced tannery inspections several times a year.
  • The tannery utilizes a closed-loop water supply with its own water treatment plant allowing for a net-zero water usage—all water used is returned to its source as it came.
  • We do not use exotics. Instead, we achieve the same look through embossed Italian calf leathers hand-painted by Italian artisans.
  • We do not use chemical solvents, instead we use water based solvents in our glues and edge paints.
  • To be long-lasting and durable, all our hardware is made of brass or stainless steel.
  • Our signature stainless steel frame is handmade in Germany two hours from where our bags are produced. Previously, those frames were sent to a gold plater in Italy. Now, our frames are 24k gold-plated a few doors down from our German factory which significantly reduces shipping distances.
  • Jewelers in the Black Forest create our 24k gold-plated brass chains. Each link is hand- soldered to create a seamless chain.
  • A 160-year-old German family run business makes our 100% recycled, tear and abrasion resistant sewing thread.
  • All our packaging is biodegradable and free of plastic material.
  • We reuse or recycle all boxes and packaging material.
  • We are committed to minimizing waste in all stages of the design and production process.
  • We do not oversample or overproduce, thereby avoiding any finished products being wasted or destroyed.
