OUR VALUES

Why do we call what we do ‘responsible’ and not ‘sustainable’?
Because we choose not to greenwash. A lot of other brands would call what we do sustainable.
But we believe that producing things will inevitably leave a footprint and therefore is not sustainable.
This is why we prefer to call what we do ‘responsible production’. To us, this feels more honest.

We put a lot of care into making informed choices. We strive to step lightly and pay attention to
even the smallest steps in our production process. We embrace the ongoing learning
this commitment requires. We believe quality and integrity must go hand in hand throughout
the design and production process. To us, this brings heart and soul to everything we do.

HANDMADE IN GERMANY BY EXPERT ARTISANS

“After having spent 24 years in New York in the fashion business and having worked with manufactures all over the world, I wanted to focus on working with artisans to produce Lutz Morris. It has always been important to me to know the conditions under which things are being made, who is making them and how people are being treated.”

We don’t believe in working with big factories in far off places, but with small family-run workshops where we know everyone personally and where individual attention is given to everything they create.
We produce exclusively in Germany with local artisans and centuries-old family run businesses.
We want the next generation to see a future for themselves in learning the craft and the value of keeping this expertise and heritage alive.
We foster and value the individual attention invested in every single piece.

GERMAN TANNED GOLD-CERTIFIED 100% TRACEABLE LEATHER

Starting in September 2022, we are transitioning to 100% traceable leather in collaboration with the Danish company SPOOR and our LWG gold certified German tannery to make this happen.
Through SPOOR’s technology, every piece of leather is fully traceable back to the farm.
All leather is sourced from Northern Europe with traceability data allowing us to get full documentation on the leather we choose to use.
This unique solution provides the necessary transparency for us to guarantee responsibly sourced leather to you.
Our German tannery is gold rated by the LWG (Leather Working Group), the world’s leading auditor of environmental practices in the leather industry.
To receive this gold rating, all components of the tanning process must also be LWG gold rated (hides, dyes, etc.).
The LWG conducts unannounced tannery inspections several times a year.
Our German leather is also ECO2L certified, utilizing the world’s first auditing method for calculating the energy efficiency and CO2 emission of a tannery.
The tannery utilizes a closed-loop water supply with its own water treatment plant allowing for a net-zero water usage - all water used is returned to its source as it came.
We do not use exotics. Instead, we turn to Italy to achieve the same look through embossed Italian leathers hand-painted by Italian artisans.

LOCALLY SOURCED AND RESPONSIBLY PRODUCED

We believe making things consciously and with purpose, products that anyone could feel good about purchasing.

Every component of every bag is sourced as close as possible to our German factories to minimize shipping distances and keep our carbon footprint as low as possible. We call this ‘slow production’.

90% of our bag components come from Germany. 10% come from nearby Italy and Spain.
All our leather, hardware and packaging are produced under the strictest EU environmental regulations.
Jewelers in the Black Forest create our 24k gold-plated brass chains, hand-soldering each link to create a seamless chain.
A 160-year-old German family run business makes our 100% recycled, tear and abrasion resistant sewing thread.
We use water-based solvents in our glues and edge paints. We do not use chemical solvents.

$10 DONATED TO EMC FOR EVERY BAG SOLD

EveryMotherCounts is dedicated to preventing maternal mortality worldwide, making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother, everywhere. This work is crucial because one woman dies every two minutes as a result of complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

Our founder, Tina Lutz Morris, has been involved with the charity since its inception.

EMC was founded by Tina's friend, Christy Turlington Burns.
They met in 2000 and worked closely together for 5 years. They traveled together, were at each other's weddings, became office neighbors in New York and had children at the same time.
When Christy had life-threatening complications during childbirth, she became aware of how lucky she was to have had excellent maternal healthcare and how so many women globally are not as fortunate.
The idea for EveryMotherCounts was born and Christy founded the charity in 2010.

Giving back has always been important to Tina and when she started Lutz Morris she saw a clear path to contributing to EMC.
To do this, Tina chose to be concrete and transparent and donate a flat $10 from every bag sold instead of donating an obscure percentage of proceeds.
$10 might not sound like a lot, but for some bags this amounts to as much as 10% of the proceeds.
